What I Drew Sunday, August 30th - Top 3

 I drew a total of six pieces over the eight hours of last Sunday’s session of “What Shall I Draw Today?” Could it be that I’m slowing down in my old age?

#1 - The Weasley Twins with Chip and Dale: suggestion by @nikkistar5394
 

Suggestions involving mashups with Harry Potter characters come in fairly regularly. Here Ron Weasley’s elder brothers Fred and George are paired with the chipmunk duo Chip and Dale. 

Always looking for a story to underpin the visuals, I pose the question, “what would happen if the chipmunks got their hands on a magic wand?” Would either posses the talent for anything to happen? I’m sure that the Weasley twin doubt that they do- or do they?


#2 - Wichita to be hangin' out with Scoob and Dynomutt: suggestion by anonymous

Scoob! (2020) was an enjoyable entry in a five decades old franchise. The Hanna-Barbera super team of Blue Falcon, Dynomutt and Dee Dee are fun additions which could have pulled focus away from the series stars, but are merged well with the story trajectory.

So what if these two talk-dog stars met with Wichita, the canine co-star of my own comic book Unstoppable Tuff-Girl? (UTG) I guess the new pack would hang out and play.

For kicks, Silky the squirrel from a Wichita adventure in issue No. 3 of UTG is added.

#3 - Elena of Avalor coronation: suggestion by @hasirhas.art

 

Last week, August 23, Elena of Avalor aired on Disney Junior, its series finale in which the title character Princess Elena, finally become s queen. In the one image that I found, Elena has a blue dress with white opera gloves. That’s all I know and saw, which severely limits what I could draw with any confidence. I decidedly  kept it to a portrait of the new queen and more of a ball room full of dignitaries.

What I Drew Sunday, March 24th - Top 3

Here’s what ranked in this pre-WonderCon WSIDT:

#1 - Buzz Lightyear / RoboCop mashup: suggestion by @realmarkd

The respective designs for Buzz Lightyear (Disney•Pixar’s Toy Story franchise) and the eponymous RoboCop share so much in common that, for sure, this mashup must be everywhere on the internet. A quick Google image search reveals the answer of, “nope.” Look at them: 1) hard exo-suits; 2) black accordion abs; and 3) accessories that pop out with push-button ease.

For the Toy Story 2 licensing style guide, I did a bunch of Buzz Lightyear drawings. I actually composed a series of how-to-draw model sheets for Buzz and Woody. Maybe someone at Disney still has copies. So, I’m saying that I can draw a reasonable Buzz on the fly. As for the other, this is the first RoboCop, whole or in part, that I’ve drawn.

I had considered replicating the original 1987 RoboCop movie poster, but he’s stepping out of a patrol car and very profile. To turn the camera to reveal the chest plate just seemed to make it more Back to the Future than RoboCop. Besides, I didn’t want to draw the car anyways.

#2 - Elphaba and Glinda as Hogwarts students: suggestion by @akoymdf

Witches are the same as wizards in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter world/universe, right? Judging by the comments I get regarding how I assign/sort characters to one of the four houses of Hogwarts, I don’t know my HP stuff as well I could.

Elphaba and Glinda from the Wicked, Broadway musical (and the book that inspired it) are witches in training, and probably would have fared better in Hogwartz than they did in Oz.

I put Glinda in Ravenclaw only because it was Gilderoy Lockhart’s (Kenneth Branagh) house. I put Elphaba in Hufflepuff because Slitherin didn’t sound right, and Hufflepuff is a more fun word than Gryffindor, even if the mascot is a badger.

#3 - Lin meets Megara: suggestion by @oliviamn14

Lin (Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away) and Megara (Disney’s Hercules) were both voiced (in English) by the talented Susan Egan. You may know Ms. Egan as the first Belle in Disney’s Broadway sensation Beauty and the Beast.

I wonder if I draw a lot of people eating. On Sunday, as it happens, I drew Olivia Moore from iZombie* eating utilizing chopsticks. I wonder secondly, if this meeting passes the Bechdel test? I approach these meetings with the questions “what would they do?” and “what would they think of the other person?” What, I don’t have time for that? I guess they’re eating.

* The suggestion was to draw Olivia Moore from iZombie the TV series that was based on a DC Comic book. What I didn’t think to research was whether the main character for each were the same, they’re not, and I happily based the drawing more on the lead character of the comic. I think the Ariel-esque character design might be interpreted as a caricature of the actress Rose McIver. Not a lot, but maybe a little… if you squint.

Potter Your World

Here’s my conception of “Sorcerer Stone” era Ron Weasley, Harry Potter and Hermione Granger drawn in 1950’s Disney style (think Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland). It’s based on the young actors from the 2001 Warner Bros. first entry in the feature film series: Rupert Grint, Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson. I chose the films as a reference point because it’s the films and not the books that are my entry into J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World.

I took a suggestion pitched during on of the “What Shall I Draw Today (WSIDT)” sessions and ran with a style that felt to me like a good match, even though a style overlay wasn’t indicated in the original suggestion. Subliminally I probably connected the character designs of Wendy’s brother John Darling with Harry.

Disney was still doing hand-drawn 2D animation the year “Sorcerer Stone” was released (see Atlantis: The Lost Empire). I wonder what Disney would have done if it had gotten the film rights to the Harry Potter series and opted to do animation? That, in fact, could be an interesting character design assignment. What I rather see, however, is the Potter books recreated in something like a Netflix series.

What I Drew Sunday – February 26th

Without further ado, I present here the top 3 of the 7 things that I was able to draw in the 6 hour Sunday session of “What Shall I Draw Today?”

#1 – Queenie and Jacob from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: suggested by harishasanic.

#2 – Stranger Things kids Lego-fied: suggested by Ryan Sieroty.

#3 – Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman: suggested by salemcattish.

With the “Fantastic Beasts” image, I went with artist’s choice styling it after the work of Al Hirschfeld. When roughing in the characters the silhouettes quickly suggested to me something Hirschfeld. Per Hirschfeld’s tradition, I tried sneaking in some “NINA”s (5 of them) and a nod to J.K. Rowling.

I narrowed down the “Stranger Things cast” suggestion down to the core group of the series’ kids: (L-R) Dustin, Eleven, Mike and Lucas. The flashlights might be Lego accurate, or they might not be, I didn’t slow down to do in-depth research.

Lastly, again by artist’s choice, I chose to stylize Dr. Quinn/ Jane Seymour after Marc Davis’s character designs for Briar Rose/ Princess Aurora in the animated classic, Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty.

The last posted drawing was the tribute to Bill Paxton. Quite a bit of time was spent on the 3 failed depictions of the late actor. I’m still not 100% happy with the final piece. May be I could have done one or two more suggestions otherwise..

All of these are going into my stock of original art for sale at my upcoming comic convention shows. The first for 2017 will by WonderCon at the end of March in the city of Anaheim, CA.
