What I Drew Sunday, May 26th – Top 3

It was a close race. From Sunday night, the Jedi came up from 3rd place. Meanwhile, Roxanne pulled ahead of both Jessica and Magoo for a spot in the top 3 from last Sunday’s WSIDT session:

#1 - Luke, Vader, & Yoda as the hitching hiking ghosts*: suggestion by @realmarkd

*In honor of Galaxy’s Edge opening soon and The Haunted Mansion’s 50th anniversary this summer.

“Hitchhiking force ghosts!” One could argue that the ghost line up at the end of Return of the Jedi might be appropriate. There you have 3 ghosts: Anakin Skywalker, Obi Wan Kenobi and Yoda. in doing so, you lose the black-clad Darth Vader. Not so iconic is his redeemed form of Anakin.

Old-man Luke got a little like Philip Seymour Hoffman in my caricature.

Rather than casting Yoda and the “prisoner” ghost, the Jedi master holds a ”space-ball” with the chain instead attached to a manacle around Vader’s ankle.

The last joke was swapping the once carpet bag with a “space-hat-box” with Darth Maul’s dismembered head, as a not-subtle allusion to the Mansion’s Hat-Box ghost.

#2 - Cleo and Figaro: suggestion by @brizee.draws

Drawing classic characters like this pair from Walt Disney’s animated feature, Pinocchio (1940), remains enjoyable. After all, characters such as these comprise the foundation of my interest in art and cartoons and then lead to my profession.

Cleo the goldfish, has that aspect that eludes my understanding, however. Which is “why does she tease Figaro so, when the kitten is quite likely to given in to his impulses and swallow the little thing?” It does come across as a charming interplay in the film. I hoped to capture that with their expressions.

#3 - Roxanne as Batgirl: suggestion by @rod_j_sloan

Roxanne from A Goofy Movie (1995) is introduced as Max’s high school crush, with Max, of course, being Goofy’s son.

This was a straight forward mashup concept. It did leave open my choice of Batgirl versions/costumes. I choose the c.2015 “Batgirl of Burnside” iteration, because of its youthful and practical appearance.

For storytelling, I added the text for “What Would Batman Do?” which I had once pitch as part of Cartoon Network’s marketing of Young Justice (2010). Taking a step back, I suppose it’s drawn as if she has sent the text. If that’s so, then to whom is she sending it that she would be smiling about it? Batman would have mapped out a full story before drawing the thing. And just maybe the icon stands for “Batgirl.”

One fan commented, that she resembles Gadget from Chip n’ Dale’s Rescue Rangers. She kind of does sans Gadget’s mouse ears.

And the remaining 6 of the 9 drawn:

Mr. Magoo dressed as Thanos

Flo from the Progressive Insurance ads as a genie

Naruto and Aang (The Last Air Bender)

Stitch as Nightcrawler (X-Men)

Jessica Rabbit as a nurse

Sam Wilson (The Falcon) as Captain America
As I do, all 9 of these will go into my traveling batch of original art for sale. My next show will be Heroes Convention, Charlotte, NC in June.

The next WSIDT session is scheduled for June 23rd.
