What I Drew Monday, Oct 11 - Disney Parks

Day No. 11

Coming off a weekend during which I couldn’t devote entire days of drawing, I’m back to the weekday pace of three sketches a night, putting the final sketch to be completing this project to some time on Saturday, October 16.

#34, pp. 68-69 - Chip and Dale / dancing at Jellyrolls / watching the Dalmatians play: Jeff S. / @motheroffreels / Nicole P.

Jellyrolls is a piano bar featuring dueling pianos, located on Disney’s Boardwalk. Naturally, the scene would feature the chipmunk duo dancing on top of one of the pianos. Naturally, Clarice, the girl chipmunk from the short Two Chips and a Miss would be a welcomed third. Naturally number three, Joe Gardner from soul would be a great pianist.

“Playing” Dalmatians here is interpreted as playing instruments rather than puppy games.

The large mirror that allows the audience to see a top-down view of the piano stage is probably the trickiest part of the scene that couldn’t be left out.

#35, pp. 70-71 - Belle and the Prince / on Space Mountain / with Scat Cat’s band playing: @nikkistar5394 / @jayrodesign / @motheroffreels

A lot of rocket trains zipping around in the dark.

2x hidden Mickeys.

#36, pp. 72-73 - Roger and Jessica Rabbit / enjoying Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin: Nicole P. / @motheroffreels

An absolutely straight-forward interpretation of the mixed up suggestion. I just simplified the room by not drawing the wall of batteries backdrop.

What I Drew Sunday, Oct 10 - Disney Parks

Day No. 10

More drawings. More details about those drawings.

#30, pp. 60-61 - Ariel and Eric / on Pirates of the Caribbean / getting spooked: @nikkistar5394 / Abigail R / @alltookayleigh

I’m always looking for ways to crop things like these attractions scenes to focus on the primary characters and minimize any other folks that would fill out ride vehicles and such.

2x hidden Mickeys. 1x Baby Oyster.

#31, pp. 62-63 - Abu / on Kali River Rapids: @Zoe.with.twodots / @nikkistar5394

A single small character in a large circular raft cropped so as not ending to draw extra characters. Plus a lot of water. I think it conveys the right amount of tension, but isn’t a good illustration of what the raft looks like, but it doesn’t need to.

3x hidden Mickeys.

#32, pp. 64-65 - Aristocats’ O’Malley and Duchess / competing fiercely on the Tomorrowland Speedway / with fishing gear: @motheroffreels / @eljcid / @cr8ure

Cats driving cars.

1x hidden Mickey.

#33, pp. 66-67 - Some of the Tomorrowland gang (Carousel of Progress, Buzz, Stitch, etc) / going on Tower of Terror / carrying the 50th birthday cake: @mascotdrawings / @caitlinfogartyart / Jeff S.

From both Disneyland’s (DL) and Magic Kingdom’s (MK) Tomorrowlands.

(Top/back row, L-R) RX-24 (Star Tours, DL), Mr. Johnson (Mission to Mars, DL), Space Man and Space Woman (DL), Mike and Sulley (Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor, MK).

Carousel of Progress family: (Middle row, left four) Cousin Orville, Father, Mother (a.k.a. Sarah), Daughter (a.k.a. Patty). (Bottom/front row, left four) Grand Father, Grand Mother, Son (a.k.a. Jimmy), Daughter (unnamed).

(Middle row, right side L-R) Buddy Boil (Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor), Sonny Eclipse (Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe, MK).

(Bottom/front row, right side, L-R) Buzz Lightyear and Emperor Zurg (Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, MK and Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, DL), Stitch and Skippy (Stitch’s Great Escape!, MK)

What I Drew Saturday, Oct 9 - Disney Parks

Day No. 9

A busy Saturday, means not a lot of drawing gets done. Oh well, there’s tomorrow and however more days I need to complete this book of sketches.

#28, pp. 56-57 - Nani and David / at the Seas with Nemo & Friends at EPCOT / Churro: @nikkistar5394 / @cr8ure / @jayrodesign

Marlin, Nemo, Dory and Squirt have to be necessarily small here, even if not as small as you’d think their proper scale should be compared with the humans, Nani and David. Maybe the aquarium window is creating a magnifying effect make them only appear larger.

Hint: Squirt is up-side-down.

3x hidden Mickeys. 1 Baby Oyster.

#29, pp. 58-59 - Lumiere / at Rafiki’s Planet Watch: @the_kira_diaries / @elijones94

This is what is called the “Affection Section,” which features the only people-guest and animal interaction in Disney’s Animal Kingdom: a.k.a. the petting zoo.

The whole of the Lumiere suggestion called for Lumiere to use his flames if paired with fireworks. So goes the story-telling danger when suggestions are mixup improv-style: which is suggestions are altered by context.

What I Drew Friday, Oct 8 - Disney Parks

Day No. 8

On this day, I made it past the half way through the book on my way towards 50. This is becoming a marathon. Trying to make up for yesterday’s two sketches, I drew four today to maintain a minimum average of three per day.

#24, pp. 48-49 - Peter Pan / at Ronto Roasters / carving pumpkins: Kinzey F. / Nicole P. / @herreriamon

There some joke to be made about the pumpkin innards that Peter has been tossing on the ground beneath him. Maybe that’s why the Mon Calamari kid is watching him?

How could I not make a “pumpkin Hook” pun?

4x hidden Mickeys.

#25, pp. 50-51 - Chip and Dale / pop up pin shop: Jeff S. / @vbehappy

Not considered “hidden” Mickeys are 1) the “Mickey” that Chip is playing at by holding two round pins over his head and 2) the Mickey on the 50 anniversary pin that Dale is holding.

The Daisy design is based on how she appears in the short “Donald’s Diary.”

2x hidden Mickeys.

#26, pp. 52-53 - Sadness & Joy / riding Maelstrom: @the_kira_diaries / Abigail R.

The way I see it, characters like Joy and Sadness don’t have physical bodies and therefore aren’t limited to any scale. Still, since the Pixar film, implies that they exist some where in Riley’s head, they’d have to be small. I depict them here atop the dragon figure head of the Maelstrom boat.

2x hidden Mickeys.

#27, pp. 54-55 - Joe Gardner / in the Haunted Mansion / struggling to cover his ears: Abigail R / @madesalvo / @the_kira_diaries

“Covering his ears” really directed the setting to something about the Haunted Mansion that might incite the reaction in Joe. Maybe all of the spirits in the seance played at the same time but not the same tune and not in the same key.

It was only while in the coloring stage did I consider the “soul” version of Joe in the mansion could have been interesting.

What I Drew Thursday, Oct 7 - Disney Parks

Day No. 7

Just 2x sketches on this Thursday. I’ll make up for it tomorrow.

#22, pp. 44-45 - The Artistokitties / in It's a Small World / looking for Hidden Mickeys: Abigail R. / @the_kira_diaries / @nikkistar5394

Are there hidden Mickeys to be found on “it’s a small world?” I really don’t know.

3x hidden Mickeys.

#23, pp. 46-47 - Casey Newton and Frank Walker (from Brad Bird's Tomorrowland) / watching Mickey's PhilharMagic: @ani8tor57 / @stevedelacruz.16

Theater show attractions don’t offer much in the way of interesting story telling opportunities for an illustration. How many ways are there to depict people watching a movie or show?

Here, I thought the 3-D aspect of “PhilharMagic” would be different if nothing else. But perhaps they look like a bunch of ghosts instead?

What I Drew Wednesday, Oct 6 - Disney Parks

Day No. 6

No drama here today. Just doing three sketches in the evening.

#19, pp. 38-39 - Rey and Ben Solo / riding Dinosaur / meeting a cast member dressed as Abu and being very confused: @motheroffreels / @caitlinfogartyart / @Zoe.with.twodots

I pushed the Abu design to have clear a costume with gloves and boots.

I placed over-sized pineapple and strawberry in the foliage for fun.

2x hidden Mickeys.

#20, pp. 40-41 - Russel with Carl and Dug / at the Emporium: @vbehappy / @kmwright222

I drew a lot of stuff.

What “hidden” things can you find?

3x hidden Mickeys. Plush versions of Mickey and Minnie.

Plush of Orange Bird, Beast, Hitchhiking Ghosts, Madame Leota, Figment, Teddi Barra, Mr. Toad, Captain Redd, Auctioneer Pirate, Abominable Snowman, Elephant, Mulan, Rapunzel, Snow White, Tiana, Ariel, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Merida, Moana, Donald, Daisy, Baby Oyster, Berloiz, Toulouse, Marie, Pooh Bear, Eeyore, Little Brother, and Simba.

#21, pp. 42-43 - Moana and Pocahontas / racing on Speedway track without cars: @elijones94 / Nicole P.

There’s a choice to be made here: do I draw the Tomorrowland Speedway or the Walt Disney World Speedway with actual racing cars? With the Tomorrowland track I could add the Wedway Peoplemover.

What I Drew Tuesday, Oct 5 - Disney Parks

 Day No. 5

On this second work day, all three sketch were done after work hours. Frankly, I was glad not to have to draw a lot of characters and a lot of back ground details on these three.

#16, pp. 32_33 - Mirabel and Antonio / on Splash Mountain / Dole Whip: @harishas.art / @harishas.art / @madesalvo

Miracle and Antonio are from the upcoming Disney film, Encanto, and for this the trailers provided enough reference. Then I went and messed up their silhouettes by drawing their hair wet and matted down.

I forgot about the Dole Whip, and had to add it between the characters with the indication of Antonio’s hand.

2x hidden Mickeys.

#17, pp. 34-35 - Mary Poppins / in Disney California Adventure: @bowling_and_bowties91 / @herreriamon

I couldn’t help myself but add more characters having chosen to set May Poppins in the area outside of the Carthay Cricle Restaurant. Mary alone wouldn’t do. I cast Huey, Dewey, Louie and Webby and newsboys.

2x hidden Mickeys.

#18, pp. 36-37 - Donald Duck / in the Animal Kingdom / joined by Meeko: @cr8ure / @ani8tor57 / @anek.arts001

I took advantage of the “Animal Kingdom” suggestion and kept the locale simple. Then I remembered the walking trees.

1x hidden Mickey. 1x hidden duck.

What I Drew Monday, Oct 4 - Disney Parks

Day No. 4

On this day, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp were down for a significant portion of the day.

This being a work day and not a day that I can work on these Disney Parks sketches, and it serving as the template for all future work days, I might be able to post a new sketch in the morning and two more at night. At the rate of three sketches a day, this project will be complete by Oct 16.

#13, pp. 26-27 - Rafiki lifting Baby Simba up / on Splash Mountain: @jessiemind / @caitlinfogartyart

Rafiki needs to be pretty high up for this and not in a hollowed out log.

At one point that “hidden” Mickey  spelled out as thorns was pretty subtle, but so as to make it less obscure it ended up being kind of obnoxious.

3x hidden Mickeys.

#14, pp. 28-29 - (L-R) Elyon Brown, Hay Lin, Cornelia Hale, Taranee Cook, Irma Lair and Will Vandom / going on the Haunted Mansion: @stevedelacruz.16 / @_jilliano124_

These character are from the animated series and comic W.I.T.C.H. Since 6 people can’t fit in a single doom buggy, I’ve placed them in the hall with the changing portraits.

3x hidden Mickeys.

#15, pp. 30-31 - Kida and Ariel / in Typhoon Lagoon / carrying a 50th anniversary cupcake: @kmwright222 / @nikkistar5394 / Jeff S.

One of the more straight forward suggestion.

Kira is from Atlantis: the Lost Empire.

2x hidden Mickeys.

What I Drew Sunday, Oct 3 - Disney Parks

Day No. 3

Last year, when filled up an autograph book with 50 sketches, I paced my self to do so over 17 consecutive days. I was also on furloughed from work and had the time to do sketches everyday. I forgot that, and mistakenly thought that I could do the same in just three days. This is going to occupy me for a couples of weeks.

#10, pp. 20-21 - Olaf / at Cosmic Ray's chilling out and listening to Sonny Eclipse / checking out all the "modern human" objects: Abigail R. / @mascotdrawings / @kmwright222

The suggested examples for “modern human objects” were Mouse ears, pins, etc.

I added Pinocchio because I thought Olaf needed a buddy.

9x Mickeys, not all exactly “hidden" Mickeys.

#11, pp. 22-23 - Anna and Rapunzel / sitting in the Hub / pestering Gaston: @alltookayleigh / Nicole P. / Kinzey F.

The Gaston bit was originally part of a Gaston & Peter Pan suggestion of one-ups-man-ship.

Bob, Helen and Jack-Jack Parr (The Incredibles) serve as a suitable family.

3x hidden Mickeys.

#12, pp. 24-25 - Roger and Anita / Omega Red vs Wolverine / on Astro Orbiters: Nicole P. / @herreriamon / @akoymdf

The first character pull was “Omega Red vs. Wolverine” and I couldn’t bring myself to place clashing Marvel characters (who currently aren’t featured in the Disney Parks) in this collection meant to commemorate Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary. So a second pull to embellish it.

2x hidden Mickeys.

What I Drew Saturday, Oct 2 - Disney Parks

 Day No. 2

After a distracted first day on this project, I jumped in earnestly for a productive day of sketches. How many pages would I complete I wondered. After two sketches I realized two things: 1) this is going to take some time to fill up this book with 50 sketches; 2) I’m going to be drawing a lot thing that nobody has ask for, like Liberty Square.

#4, pp. 8-9 - Marvel Characters / (in) the Magic Kingdom: @motheroffreels / Jeff S.

(L-R) Teen Groot, Nebula, Captain Marvel, T’Challa and Kate Bishop. Staying away from the main six Avengers, I selected these characters to go on a first-time visit to the Magic Kingdom, and casting Kate Bishop (Hawkeye) as the returning, defect leader.

2x hidden Mickeys.

#5, pp. 10-11 - Han and Leia taking little Ben / just strolling the park!: Nicole P. / @harishas.art.

Second to Main Street, U.S.A., where in the Magic Kingdom is a nice place to stroll? I chose Liberty Square.

2x hidden mickeys.

#6, pp. 12-13 - Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps / on Tower of Terror: @ani8tor57 / @realmarkd

Having drawn characters sitting in a falling box before, here I chose to depict them waiting outside the elevator door. This is a big part of the attraction experience: waiting.

2x hidden Mickeys.

#7, pp. 14-15 - (L-R) Dizzy, Celia, Uma, C.J. Hook, Freddie, Mal and Evie / at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique: @harishas.art / @alltookayleigh

Also known as the Villains Kids (VK), I choose to fill the space with seven figures (mostly heads, yes) with no details of the boutique’s interior.

2x hidden Mickeys.

#8, pp. 16-17 - Kenai and Koda / on the teacups: @anek.arts001 / @alltookayleigh

These two are from Brother Bear.

To the left is Merida from Brave.

2x hidden Mickeys.

#9, pp. 18-19 - The Swamp Boys with Louis / on top of the Pirates ride sign / Pin trading : @swampboyes / @nikkistar5394 / Abigail R.

Finally, a mix-up suggestion with all three categories: characters, Disney Parks thing and embellishment.

I’m not sure if the ”Swamp Boys” were just the trio of alligators from the America Sings attraction formerly at Disneyland, or if it also included the raccoon and singing bullfrogs.

This fulfills my way of sneaking in a baby oyster (Alice in Wonderland) into a big Disney art project.

5x hidden Mickeys.
