Princess Powered

Much of this I’ve covered in the previous post “Earth’s Mightiest Princesses” (Oct. 29, 2017). However, the only one of the five parts of the series to receive a Top 9 position features Tiana as Captain America.

I began with the center piece which 1) partly addresses the What Shall I Draw Today? suggestion of the mash-up, 2) compositionally it is balanced enough to stand on its own, and 3) leaves me the out, should I choose, to never followup with drawing all of the mash-ups.

Working from a rough list of mash-up that I developed, here I go expanding on the idea. I’m sticking with the official Disney Princess list of 11 girls.

Naturally, I followed through with the panel to the left of center, fulfilling the official 11 Disney Princesses of the franchise. I also attempted to use Avengers members depicted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe of films.

Now, I’ve gone and done it and embarked on the expansion panels, going beyond the franchise’s 11 princesses to include some of the popular modern princesses. Elsa, of course, is weather controlling Thor, and the Avengers must have a thunder god/ goddess. I’ve also had to expand my Avenger choices to those from the comics having run out of those translated to screen.

And I finalize it all with some of the “lost girls”: Atlantis: The Lost Empire’s Princess Kida, The Black Cauldron’s Princess Eilonwy, Enchanted’s Princess Giselle and Peter Pan’s Princess Tiger Lily. If you eliminate the princesses from the various animal kingdoms of Disney and Pixar animated features, i.e. Faline (Bambi),  Nala (The Lion King) and Atta and Dot (A Bug’s Life), it leaves Ariel’s sisters, Nancy (Enchanted) and arguably Meg (Hercules) as unrepresented “lost girls.” But then, if Mulan can be a princess then...

Oh well, I'll leave that for another time.

The Hundred Acre Woods’ Mightiest Heroes

This mash-up of Winnie the Pooh characters and Marvel’s Avengers heroes was one of the top nine liked posts in 2016 on my Instagram feed, @monstergram7. On top of that, it was the #1 liked drawing from my June 26 session of “What Shall I Draw Today?” I chose to use the Avengers line-up from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Let me break down the shoot-from-the-hip top-of-my-head mash-up combinations:

Captain A-bear-ica (Winnie the Pooh / Captain America) – The primary character of Christopher Robin’s friends matched up with the assumed leader of the Avengers is a natural fit.

Iron-Tigger (Tigger / Iron Man) – The bouncy tiger with double-“guhs” who’s slightly more popular than Pooh Bear matched with the tech-armored wise acre who’s slightly more popular than Cap.

Eethor (Eeyore /  Thor) – The gloomy donkey with an rain cloud above his head matched with the good-time legendary Asgardian God of Thunder. Less a good match, and more the leftovers after some of the following better matches.

The Incrabbitle Hulk (Rabbit /  Hulk) – The irascible rabbit matched with the anger triggered rage monster. Yes, Rabbit would hulk-out more than the others.

Chris Fury (Christopher Robin / Nick Fury) – The boy who returns to the Hundred Acre Woods to  help his friends and have adventures matched with the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who helped form the Avengers.

Kanga-Noir (Kanga / Black Widow) – The singular female denizen of the Hundred Acre Woods match with the first female Avengers. 

Owleye (Owl / Hawkeye) – The friendly know-it-all bird matched with the down-to-earth archer with a bird in his code name, and arguably neither part of their respective core groups.

Falc-let (Piglet / Falcon) – The timid best friend of Pooh Bear matched with the flight enhanced best friend of Captain America (on the Avengers). As much a left-overs match up as Eeyore & Thor with an as awkward mash-up code name.

Under-Roo (Roo / Spider-Man) – The high-energy young son of Kanga matched with the young hero-in-training web-slinger. The mash-up code name just works, provided that you saw Captain America: Civil War, enough to push past the fact that Spidey isn’t a member of the Avengers.

HeroesCon 2014: Con Sketches

The Commissioner

Yesterday, I exhibited my comic, “Tuff-Girl” No. 1, at the first mini-convention held by Oxford Comics in Atlanta. As much as anything, it was an opportunity for local comic artists to present themselves and their wares to the local comic buying public.

It turned out to be a modest affair, on an otherwise pleasant day for the outdoor event.

Here are the sketches that I worked up during the seven hours, save for three which I sold: 1) Humungousaur from “Ben 10 Alien Force”; 2) Supergirl; and 3) a commission based on the patron’s original character.

The first sketch of the day, and except for the commission done like all that I would do that day by memory. It’s not terribly well planned as far as fitting on the board, and I forgot to color in blue pants.


Samurai Jack

Jack still has his fans. It’s nice to test myself to see if I can still draw things I haven’t draw - well, in this case - since May at Heroes Con.

Based on Marvel’s venerable Captain America. I'm pretty certain that Marvel has or had a young female version of Cap, but perhaps that was in a fictitious “What If?” story. Other wise, this is an original design.

Having recently purchased yet another home video edition of Walt Disney Pictures’ “Beauty and the Beast,” it’s no surprise to me that I pulled this out of my repertoire. In the context of a convention sketch, I might have been showing off.
