What I Drew Sunday, January 27th - Top 3

Let’s cut to the chase.

I drew 12 pieces on last Sunday’s session of What Shall I Draw Today? Here are the top 3 liked pieces:

#1 - Stitch as Mickey the Sorcerer’s Apprentice (suggestion by Kevin Sherwood)

I call this “The Sorcerer’s Appren-Stitch.” The suggestion additionally requested for Stitch to be commanding the bucket brigade. If you know the segment from Walt Disney’s Fantasia, then that can only involve the magically animated army of brooms. Here, three bucket-carrying brooms stand-in for an army. 

Stitch takes on Mickey Mouse’s costume including the iconic pointed hat borrowed from Yensid, the Sorcerer. It felt right to have Stitch climb up to the top of one of the brooms. However, what may not be a clear is the detail of having one of his 4 arms emerge from his robe to grasp the top of the broom, freeing his top two arms to gesticulate like an orchestra conductor.

#2 - Ant-Man and the Wasp at Disneyland (suggestion by @fletchthis)

Both the designs for the tiny heroes and the famed theme park are 1960s era. I think it’s more fun to play with those nostalgic nods. For the characters, that usually means the costumes are simpler to draw, than, for comparison, their modern live-action film versions. 

The Tomorrowland setting clicked for two size-referencing reasons. The first is the use of “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow,” the theme for the old Disneyland attraction “Carousel of Progress” by the Sherman brothers. The second is the area’s tallest icon: the TWA rocket. 

The scene behind the characters channels some of the John Hench concept paintings of the land without being exactly derivative. Possibly the perspective could have been worked out better. I traded off weird, but more accurate fish-eye distortion for clarity.

#3 - Mulan (suggestion by @chiemi_art)

By a mere 6 likes, this piece places in the top three according to the tally of the first 30-hours. As time goes on, its possible that number 4, “The X-Smurfs,” may yet surpass this on likes counts.

To draw a different Mulan than what I draw at work, I looked this up on the internet, one of her costumes from the sequel. The distinction is subtle since it’s an amalgamation of two of her costumes of the original animated feature: 1) the green color palette of her “village” costume used primarily for dolls and other products; and 2) the silhouette of her blue, third act, Forbidden City costume.

There’s not much exemplary regarding story or pose, I don’t think. I probably underestimate the number of Mulan fans out there.

What I Drew Sunday, August 26th – Top 3

Disney was strong with the most liked sketches drawn in Sunday’s session of What Shall I Draw Today?

Here are the top 3:

#1 – DuckTales Cast Exiting the TARDIS: suggestion by @tsfogg

Here I chose to depict the main cast of the 1987 Disney Afternoon animated adventure series to tumble out of the Doctor Who famous TARDIS. I hold nothing against the new, current series, but some followers may have noticed that I tend to reference early if not original character designs for my WSIDT sketches. 

In my mind, the suggestion was quite clear and the composition could not vary much from what I drew. Launchpad, being the tallest, naturally got set back and naturally the last of the group to stumble out of the TARDIS. Huey, Dewey, Louie and Webby duck-pile on top of frustrated Scrooge McDuck for easy slapstick. Little light-bulb-headed Little Helper was a late addition, because he fits. Well, he kind of fits in most places doesn’t he? That kind of implies that Gyro Gearloose is involved if not nearby.

#2 – Mulan with Lightsaber: suggestion by @noreeneb20

Mulan wears several costumes in the original Disney animated feature film. Because of it’s similarity to something that Obi Wan Kenobi and other Jedi have worn in the Star Wars films, particularly in the infamous prequel trilogy, depicting Mulan in her Ping warrior/ training clothes worked out pretty well. 

I then gave her a green bladed saber. It’s kind of her color and it’s a good-guy color in Star Wars. 

I wonder what prompted Mulan to power up the lightsaber. Could it be a hun with Darth Maul styled face tattoos?

#3 – Bagheera meeting Black Panther: suggestion by Kinzey

What happens what a black panther meets Black Panther? Respect, an exchange of respect.

Although not explicitly noted, I drew the Disney version of The Jungle Book big cat. This was for expedience and because there wasn’t a compelling reason not to. T’Challa has removed his helmet/mask because all of the Marvel movie heroes seem to keep doing that.

Of course, with one little sketch, I’m not writing a whole story and much less a novel. I do like to at least imply some storytelling. A lot is suggested by the cool blues of the moonlit color scheme. The rest is left to your imagination.

Maybe the pair later went to get something tasty? Ice cream? It doesn’t always have to come down to ice-cream. But it could be ice-cream.

Washed and Wary

I would think that all artist of all mediums, seek to do something different than what they’ve done previously. If that’s true, then it should be of no surprise that when drawing the Disney Princess, as I now do as a Disney staff character artist, given the chance I begin with the notion, “What haven’t I drawn this girl do before?”

I’ve neven drawn Mulan from that scene in the movie where she washes a day’s filth off in the river – with disapproving Mushu nearby. Not until this summer. You’re welcome.
